Baltimore resident Igor Yasinov, 35, was found guilty following a four-day trial after assaulting several correctional staff members and causing damage in the facility.
Court documents state that the assaults began on Nov. 16, 2021, when Yasinov broke a control center window within the facility with a broom stick and suffered minor injuries.
That was just the beginning.
Prosecutors say that Yasinov was transported to the medical unit for treatment by members of the correctional staff, during which time he made threats of violence to the escorting correctional officers.
After being treated, he was taken to the segregation unit, and while he was initially cooperative, he "became irate and refused the orders of the correctional officers when he learned that he was not returning to his original housing unit" and refused to lock into his cell.
When the COs attempted to escort him, prosecutors said that Yasinov began to fight them, and swept the leg of one officer, causing her and others to fall to the ground until they could apply leg irons to prevent further attacks.
He was then carried to his cell.
Once in the cell, Yasinov continued to fight the officers before relenting and allowing them to remove the leg irons. He was ordered to face the cell wall to allow officers to exit individually; however, he had one last stand.
According to prosecutors, as the last officer was attempting to leave, Yasinov charged the group, slamming his body into them, continuing to flail on the floor, kicking officers and attempting to strike them with his hands.
Several officers were injured, including one who suffered a fractured tibia, and three others sustaining injuries to their heads, necks, backs, and limbs.
At the time of the attack, Yasinov was awaiting resentencing for conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery and kidnapping in Maryland.
He is now charged with four counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers or employee, and inflicting bodily injury.
Yasinov faces up to 10 years in prison for each count when he is sentenced in February.
